Modular collaboration – A compositional strategy (2006 - present)

For english please scroll below. All of the recent ALULA TON SERIEN projects and concerts were developed and implemented under the compositional premises of a practice termed MODULAR COLLABORATION. Each MODULAR COLLABORATION is the development of a systemic composition, which can either result in a concert performance, in an installation, or as most often, in a hybrid of both. In a systemic composition participants are developing individual MODULES, which include an instrument and the placement/role within the overall system. This placement involves relating one individual MODULE to the site and to the other MODULES. The goal is to explore and experiment with new ways of composing and collaborating. Through MODULAR COLLABORATIONS a non-hierarchical, decentralized form of organization is put into practice, replacing the single artist or composer as the creative genius. Pieces are developed between interconnected equals as processes of adopting basic materials and themes into systemic compositions. The name of the respective group is formed by listing the last names of all participants in alphabetical order. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - en> All of the ALULA TON SERIEN projects and concerts were developed and implemented under the compositional premises of a practice termed MODULAR COLLABORATION.
LOWER EGYPT 2012

June 2012 In April and May 2012 I stayed in Lower Egypt for a bird migration survey. This gave me several opportunities for sound recording. To walk around in Egypt as a foreigner, moreover with suspiciously looking equipment, is not easy these times. So I could manage only a few trips, sometimes acompanied by a policeman in order to protection and control. In addition to these social difficulties there were heavy climate and weather conditions. The temperature was between 35 and 43°C and in spring there are heavy winds - the so called Khamsin. In egyptian villages some bird species are omnipresent: Laughing Doves Streptopelia senegalensis, Graceful Prinia Prinia gracilis, Spur-winged Lapwing Vanellus spinosus, House Sparrow Passer domesticus, Zitting zistola Cisticiloa juncidis and the Senegal Thick-knee Burhinus senegalensis. Unfortunately there was constantly anthropogenic sounds or more precisely: noise! Cars, car horns, generators, water pumps, motor cycles, muezzins through loudspeakers, earpiercing loud popular music form cars and Tuk tuks. This is literally hell for a wild life sound recordist.

January 2012 The aim of my annual winter residence at the Greifswalder Oie in 2011 was to make landscape sound recordings. Marcus Held, photographer and colleague for several years, and I are planning a publication about the scenically aspects of the isle. So we went there together this year and did a lot of photo- and phonographs. To gain an insight in what is collected acoustically, you can listen to this samples from larger recordings.

April 2012 A few days ago I´ve read a short notice by Yannick Dauby concerning the amazing sounds made by Tortoises. On this occasion, here´s a short recording from a Russian Tortoise Testudo horsfieldii uttering a threatening call through my intrusion via the wind protection looking like a mammallian raptor.

September 2012 At the beginning of July I went to England to participate in the Wildlife Sound Recording Societies' annual meeting for the second time. After that, trips to the famous Rutland Water Reserve (yes, I saw the Ospreys) and Norfolk's Cley Marshes should follow subsequently, mainly for birding. © Pics by Mathias Putze

VESSEL TRACKS

April 2012 During the last years, I have been participating in offshore bird- and marine mammal monitoring trips at the North and the Baltic Sea. Working in the day- and nighttime, I have learned to appreciate both, the sounds of the marine habitat itself and that of the vessel`s devices. Over the years, most of these sounds feel more and more familiar to me. Some devices have changed their character, being more music instruments than part of an engine. Maybe this is the ordinary process of appropriation. In preperation of the upcoming CD "Hydrograf" I would like to introduce a few of theses devices/instruments combined with the always changing geophonies of the marine habitat.

VESSEL TRACKS II

November 2012 I've never understood what people makes enthusiastic with patriotism. For me, artificial constructs of nations and national identities make no sense and so I do not think in such structures. Nevertheless sometimes I couldn´t resist to feel worse about particular countries/areas than about others - depending on their inhabitants special behaviour - for example eco crimes. Some of them became a symbol for seemingly boundless human ignorance: Japan, Malta, Italy or Faröe Islands fot instance.
